Pink underwear

There are some odd traditions around Christmas and New Year, like eating 12 grapes at midnight on New Year's Day (which comes from Spain) or kissing under the mistletoe (mostly North American).

Last night I found out about one that seems to come mostly from Argentina, and that is about buying pink underwear. I looked it up, and I couldn't find any references in English, so I assumed it was coming from Latin America; then I realized that all the pages I found were from Argentina, so I wonder if it's something that only comes from there.

There were different versions, some saying that you buy the underwear on Christmas Eve, another on New Year's Eve; others said that the underwear should be red or yellow (or pink for Christmas and then red for New Year's Day). In the end, the one that makes the most sense to me (if that could be possible) indicates that you should buy pink underwear for Christmas, and then wear it on New Year's Eve.

There are some conditions: they have to be new, and they have to be a gift. They can be culottes, thongs, made of satin or lace, plain, striped... as long as they're pink. Apparently, they bring good luck, and they are gifts that grandmothers, aunts or mothers pass on. "Some ladies buy big quantities for their granddaughters, daughters and nieces", said a store clerk.

In case you're wondering, no, I'm not going to wear a pink thong tonight. Or am I?...

Tantas costumbres distintas, y yo no conocía ninguna!

Biddie, it didn't work, I couldn't find pink undies my size. I mean, I saw one, but they guy was covering his car with it.

Biddie, we do buy pink panties for our friends (girlfriends... LOL), sisters, moms, grandmas, etc.
The idea is that you give them as a present for Christmas and you are supposed to wear them on New Year's Eve for good luck (love actually, not just good luck).

Brazilians for instance dress all in white, also use the pink panty and something red for passion, blue for peace and can't remember what else, but I know they also have something yellow and green. Of course, not all together, you have to choose (for instance, white dress, pink panty, red nails, etc)

    :)

Okay I have heard of the 12 grapes, throwing a bucket of water out the backdoor, and black eye peas, but this was the first I ever heard of pink underwear! LOL!

  17. Shannon, you keep reading this blog and will soon realize that nothing should surprise you about us Argentines... :-)))

But I have to be honest, I'm almost 41 and I had never heard about this tradition until last week.
