Black sheep

The Toronto Argonauts (CFL) are always a favourite, yet they continue to suck season after season. At best, they will make a semi final, which is not such a big feat when you play in a league that has, what, eight teams? Even the Majors, the OHL team from neighbouring Mississauga, couldn't escape the Toronto curse and dropped the finals against Owen Sound, after having taken a 2-0 lead.
The Toronto Blue Jays (baseball) will always start the season looking strong, but you know that they will go down eventually, in spite of having a really good player in Bautista. And let's not even talk about the most famous Toronto team, the Maple Leafs. One of the most popular teams in North America, they haven't won a title since forever. Even more, they haven't even been anywhere near a chance of playing for the Stanley Cup in many, many years. So many that I wasn’t even one year old the last time they won it!
But there's always a team ready to ruin everything and actually have a successful season. I'm talking about Toronto Rock, the lacrosse team. They just won their sixth title in 12 years (since their inception in 1999) and definitely look on their way to become a 'dynasty team', as they like to call them here. They beat Washington last night at the Air Canada centre, in front of more than 15,000 people. An excellent performance by the team representing Canada's national summer sport.
So what to say to the Toronto Rock, that continue to be very successful in spite of the fact that they're a Toronto-based team? Shame on you, guys, shame on you. You're ruining Toronto's reputation as the graveyard for all professional sports teams.

Es sabido que los equipos basados en Toronto tienen una sola razón de ser en sus respectivas ligas: llenar un lugar para que haya un número par. Pensar en un equipo de Toronto con chances de ganar algo es casi una locura. Por ejemplo, tenemos a los Toronto Raptors (NBA), que cuando se quedan apenas afuera de los playoffs dicen que tuvieron una ‘temporada exitosa'. Toronto FC (MLS) continúa siendo un equipo mediocre que desilusiona a todos, a pesar del soporte tan fuerte que aún tiene en sus fans. Estuve en el Estadio BMO el sábado y vi cómo Toronto no sólo desperdició una ventaja de 2-0 contra el colista Chicago Fire, sino que hasta casi terminó perdiendo el partido.
Los Toronto Argonauts (CFL) son siempre favoritos, pero ‘siguen apestando año tras año. Como mucho, embocan una semi final, lo que no es mucho cuando juegan en una liga que tiene, cuántos, ocho equipos? Hasta los Majors, el equipo de la vecina mississauga que juega en la OHL, fueron afectados por la maldición torontiana (bueno, vienen de alllí) y perdieron 3-4 en las finales contra Owen Sound, luego de haber tomado una ventaja de 2-0.

Y no nos olvidemos del equipo más famoso de Toronto, los Maple Leafs. Es uno de los equipos más populares (y valiosos) de Norte América, pero no han ganado un título desde que se enfrió la tierra. Es más, hace muchos años que ni cerca de jugar por la Stanley Cup han estado. Tantos años que yo era un bebé de meses la última vez que la ganaron!
Pero siempre hay alguien dispuesto a arruinarlo todo y tener una temporada exitosa. Estoy hablando de Toronto Rock, el equipo de lacrosse. Acaban de ganar su sexto título en 12 años (desde su creación en 1999) y definitivamente están en camino de convertirse en lo que aquí denominan ‘una dinastía’. Anoche le ganaron a Washington en la final, jugando en el Air Canada Centre ante más de 15,000 personas. Una performance excelente del equipo que representa al deporte nacional de Canadá.
Qué decirles a los Toronto Rock, que continúan siendo exitosos a pesar de estar en Toronto? Qué vergüenza, muchachos. Están arruinando la ‘reputación’ de Toronto como el cementerio de los sueños de todo equipo profesional.

Para empezar, mi enorme agradecimiento a la gente de "Infierno Rojo", especialmente "Tenés Razón", que levantó mi historia y la publicó allí. Con sus visitas contribuyeron a destrozar mi previo record de visitas, llevádolo de 267 (del día después de que me publicaron en "Clarín") a un impresionante 387. Increíble. Tuve muchos comentarios también, y aprecio mucho los muy lindos mensajes que le dejaron a Juan, que tuvo una de las mejores noches de su vida anoche.

Who's up for some gossip? I know I am!!! Just after the players got in the bus, one of them called a little kid who was outside and asked him to get inside. A few minutes later, he came back with a souvenir (some shorts) and a message for a young lady who was with him: "He wants me to give him your phone number"... The girl complied, of course... Which player? I know which one!!! :-D
A alguien le interesa un buen chisme? A mí sí!!! Justo luego de que los jugadores se metieron en el bus, uno de ellos llamó a un niño que estaba afuera y lo invitó a subir. A los pocos minutos, el chico salió del micro con un souvenir (unos pantalones) y un mensaje para una señorita que estaba con él: "Quiere que le dé tu número de teléfono"... La chica se lo dió, por supuesto... Qué jugador? Yo sé qué jugador fue!!! :-D

Toronto FC 0 - Independiente (Arg) 1 - Report
Toronto FC dominated in the first half, but failed to consolidate that in the net. Their newest star, 16 years old Abdus Ibrahim was a nightmare for Independiente's defence. There were many opportunities to score, but the forwards failed to send that last touch. Ibrahim missed a goal almost from under the net. I remember I turned to my occasional neighbour and told him: "TFC wasted so many chances in the first half; I hope they don't regret that later".

Independiente looked much better in the second half, and had a fantastic chance when a great shot by Pablo Vitti hit the crossbar, with the goalie only being able to watch. A few minutes later, Sosa took a free kick that found Vitti open to give Independiente the lead, that would translate into the final result.
A solid performance by our local team, in front of a crowd of about 19,000 people, playing very well against one of the most important teams in the world (second only to Boca Juniors in number of international titles won, and ahead of teams like Milan and Real Madrid). As I said, TFC deserved better and I think the only reason why they lost is because they were in front of a team that knows how to work games like these out.
Juan had the best of times, getting to watch the team he's a fan of, shaking hands with many players, and getting pictures taken with players like Dichio and Guevara (Toronto FC), Machín, Assmann and Caracoche (Independiente). He will never forget this evening.

Toronto FC dominó la primera mitad, pero no pudo consolidar ese dominio en la red. Su nueva estrella, el chico de 16 años Abdus Ibrahim fue una pesadilla para la defensa de Independiente. Tuvieron muchas chances de anotar, pero los delanteros fallaron en la definición. Ibrahim se perdió un gol increíble debajo del arco. Recuerdo haberle dicho a mi ocasional vecino: "TFC desperdició tantas oportunidades en el primer tiempo, que espero que no lo tenga que lamentar más tarde".
Independiente lució mucho mejor en la segunda parte, y tuvo una gran chance cuando un fantástico tiro de 'reventó' el travesaño, mientras el arquero sólo atinaba a mirar. Unos minutos más tarde, Sosa tomó un tiro libre que nuevamente encontró a Vitti libre para marcar el 1-0 que sería definitivo. Toronto se fue con todo al ataque y tuvo buenas chances, pero no pudo empatar.

Una performance sólida del equipo local, en frente de unas 19,000 personas, jugando muy bien frente a uno de los equipos más importantes del mundo (sólo detrás de Boca Juniors en cuanto a torneos internacionales ganados, y por encima de equipos como Milan y Real Madrid). Como dije, TFC mereció más suerte, y creo que la razón principal por la que perdió es que jugó frente a un equipo con oficio, que sabe cómo solucionar estos partidos complicados.
Juan tuvo la mejor de las noches, pudiendo por fin ver a su equipo favorito en vivo, dándose la mano con muchos jugadores y sacándose fotos con jugadores como Dichio y Guevara (Toronto FC) o Machín, Assmann y Caracoche (Independiente). Jamás olvidará este día.
