Letters from Pepe - #01

(En español más abajo)

CanadaFor a few years and after we moved to Canada, my late grandfather Pepe wrote us letters, the first one being a memorable one. He did not have our address, so he simply wrote my name in the envelope, along with my phone number, and ‘Waterloo, Canada’. Needless to say, that letter arrived to destination without any problems. Smile

I still treasure these letters that were difficult to decypher (he was well in his 90s when he wrote them and it’s not like he was famous for his handwriting skills even before that), but so nice to receive! The one in this post is a particular poignant one, and one I have mentioned before: it’s the one he wrote to us immediately following the death of our grandmother Haydeé.

Allow me to share this letter then; hopefully you will get a glimpse of what this man was like, and why it is still such an important influence to all of his seven grandsons, almost 9 years after he left this world.

Dear Gabriel and Gabriela and great-grandchildren:

I write this letter with deep sadness due to the death of our beloved Abuela. Still, we feel a lot of relief because she was suffering; God determined this. I still cannot believe it but (…) I am comforted and feel better now.

Well, I hope that you (are all) well, which is always my biggest hope. I had already written you, but the letter came back because the address was incorrect.

I send kisses to everybody.

Your Grandfather

Queridos Gabriel y Gabriela y bisnietos:
