Embarrassing moments - #52

(En español más abajo)

Embarrassing moments

CanadaIt was a long week and a half in Louisiana, as we were working hard on an upgrade that proved to be a little more complicated than it looked. I worked closely with the Project Manager, as usual, and in this case it was my good friend Luis, with whom I had worked in Brazil already. Luis is Mexican, so we would speak Spanish all the time.

Well, not all the time.

Whenever I was reading an e-mail or a document that was in English, I would turn and speak to him in that language. This mean guy would let me do it, so I would stop half sentence, realized what I was doing, curse and then switch to Spanish, feeling really dumb.

But the funny, embarrassing moment happened once I left. I was checking in at the airport, and the clerk said: “That’s all, have a great flight”, to which I of course replied: “Thanks, you too!”

That would be silly, but not embarrassing; many people give those mechanical answers, after all. But no, I had to go for it. I tried to apologize or justify what I had said, and I ended stammering “Well, I meant, I don’t… I didn’t mean, um, I know you’re not going anywhere, it’s just…” and only stopped when I noticed the clerk wasn’t even looking at me anymore…
