Silly Monkey Stories #174 - Faith

(En español más abajo)

USA08/Dec/2011 – Florencia (8)

I was home for only one day last week, because I was in between trips. I wanted to be home on the 8th because that’s the day we traditionally set up our Christmas tree. Florencia had also asked me to come because she needed me for a school project (she had to ‘interview’ me). Unfortunately, she forgot her binder at school so we couldn’t do it. And because of all the kids’ and Gaby’s activities that day, we couldn’t put up the Christmas tree either! :-(

But we did have time for other things. I was sitting in the couch when Flor came to hug me. Then she asked me:

- Daddy… is Santa Claus actually real?
- (Gasp!) What? Why do you ask me that?
- I don’t know… Sometimes I think he really exists, but other times I think it’s just you and Mommy…
- And how do you feel?
- I don’t know, I’m not sure.
(Pause)
- Well, Flor, though Santa Claus has nothing to do with religion, it’s still a matter of faith. You just have to believe…

She left, happy, as I watched her. It was bound to happen one day, but that doesn’t mean that I want for that to happen, because it’s yet another sign that my kids are growing up and consequently I’m getting old… Being the selfish dad I am, I wish my kids would never grow up…

Argentina 08/Dic/2011 – Florencia (8)

Luego me preguntó:

- Papi… Santa Claus es de verdad?
- (Glup!) Cómo? Por qué me preguntás eso?
- No sé…
- No sé, no estoy segura.
(Pausa)

  1. I too am dreading the day when our oldest stops believing in Santa. Maybe he never will? We go to great lengths to keep the magic alive. :P
