Silly Monkey Stories #115 – Three-peat

(En español más abajo)

Canada12/Sep/2010 – Thomas (15) and Santi (15)

Well, as I mentioned in my long post yesterday, Santi won the St. Catharines Grape & Wine tournament with his team, for the third year in a row. Our participation in this tournament was in doubt at first, but then we finally made the decision and it did pay off!!!

Santi enjoyed a great weekend with his friends. It's great to see how he emerged as one of the leaders of this team in spite of him being a 'new guy' somehow (he played here two years ago, then went back to the "B" team and then back up). He would work very hard at practices and he was the guy who got in charge of doing the warm-ups before every game. Santi's passionate about soccer and he showed here how responsible and dedicated he can be, given the right incentive.

Though he played very well in general, he only got one goal and it wasn't an important one. But nobody had any doubts about his contribution. In spite of playing as a striker, a position where a lot of endurance and concentration is required, he would rarely come off; in fact, he wasn't subbed at all during the final. He is not a star, but he has that unparalleled drive that makes him a key player. Some coaches have told me "Santi on a bad day is still more dangerous than most of the rest of the players on a good day". While it might be a little exaggerated, I believe there's some truth in this, and it's not related to skill but to pure determination and hunger.

But let's get down to the 'Silly Monkey' part of this post, though it's not exactly hilarious. The first time Santi played in this tournament, in 2008, he got a picture taken with his very good friend Thomas, an excellent player who was acting as a 'call-up' (guest). The 2009 edition found Thomas in the roster, but Santi as the guest; still we got that picture...

On Sunday, after all the medals and trophies were given, they immediately realized they needed to get a picture taken; and this time, they were both on the team! Will the 2011 version of this Tournament find them both as guest players? It's the only combination left! :-)

The bottom line of this story is that we once again end the outdoor soccer season on a high note. But the most important thing to me is to see that the guys that are among Santi's best friends are as nice, healthy and wonderful kids as he is. I have been coaching some of these guys for so long that they are almost like family to me, and it feels great watching they grow into the terrific young men they are today.

Argentina12/Sep/2010 – Thomas (15) y Santi (15)
