Places I've been to #23

(Picture from Social Times)
CanadaIt's been a while since the last time I published a "Places I've been to" post. Almost a year, actually.
Well, now that the summer is over, I would like to show you some of the places we visited, something I will do in conjunction with my almost abandoned 'SW Ontario museum' blog (did you actually remember I had that one?).
Let's start with Goderich, a small city located 125 km NW of Waterloo, and by the Lake Huron. Founded in 1827, the town is named after Frederick John Robinson, 1st Viscount Goderich, who was British prime minister at the time. With a population of near 7,500, Queen Elizabeth II once commented that Goderich was "The prettiest town in Canada". My guess is that she must have been there watching a sunset... which is among the most beautiful things you can get to see.
Goderich's downtown has an octagonal traffic circle known as 'The Square'. The county courthouse stands in the middle of The Square, along with several other interesting buildings. There's also a salt mine (the largest in the world) that extends 5 kilometres under Lake Huron and it's operated by Sifto Canada. The city has a busy industrial harbour, used mostly to load salt onto lake and sea freighters.
The city has three beautiful (though small) public beaches, and it's a great place to spend the day if you live nearby (it's just two and a half hours away from Toronto). We found a small quaint restaurant near the harbour, where they feature all-you-can-eat of a glorious fish and chips... but I will show you those pictures tomorrow!

  2. North of Goderich, just past the airport, is Sunset Beach road. Take that road to the lake and go down the stairs to the beach. It's one of the best-kept secrets of the area. Well, until I just spilled the beans...

  4. The only time I can be in other places is by reading blog posts like this. I feel that the only time I can ever go places is when I retire from work. :(
