True Patriot love

(En español más abajo)

CanadaIt was Canada Day yesterday, so we went out to assist to some of the celebrations, like we do every year.

We normally leave home late enough to barely make it to the fireworks, which start once it gets dark. Problem is, at this time of the year and in this latitude, that doesn't happen until around 10:15 PM or even later, and it was unseasonably cool last night!

We arrived in there  much earlier than usual this time, and we went to where all the events take place, just by Columbia Lake. It was absolutely beautiful to see tens of thousands of people (newspapers estimated 60,000) celebrating in absolute harmony, watching the live numbers and spending ridiculous amounts of money on lukewarm hot dogs orb sticky cotton candy. For a moment, it reminded me of that fantastic party that was Buenos Aires' bicentennial last May.

Lots of kids (and their parents) were playing soccer, a sign of the times (we also saw lots of Argentine jerseys and flags). It was a very enjoyable evening, and the amazing display of fireworks was just the icing of the cake.

I felt really proud of being Canadian, which made realize that... well, I AM Canadian. This is a great time of the year, with Canada Day and Argentina's Independence Day only eight days apart. I'm moved when the Argentine National Anthem plays before every World Cup game and I am also move whenever I get to sing 'O Canada', one of the most beautiful songs I know.

I feel as Canadian as I am Argentine, and I love that. You don't have to give up on your home country to live here, it's perfectly fine -and much better- to love both equally. I will be eternally grateful to both of my 'homes and native lands'. Just because things didn't work for me back home I will hate my own country and feel relieved about having left when bad things happen, I just can be that cynical and shallow. I wish Argentina had a better present and especially a better future, but I wish the same for Canada! It just seems more likely to happen here, though. :-(

The only problem I have is when Argentina and Canada play each other. I just don't know who to cheer for! In reality, the only sports where it would look like both teams could have a chance are basketball rugby, so I normally cheer for the strongest team. It's not like Canada would ever win at soccer or Argentina at winter sports!

I grew up in a family where my parents were divorced since I was six years old, so I soon got used to having two homes. Thirty-five (or more) years later, I feel exactly the same. I have two homes, and I love both.

It just happens that my place in the world is here.

  1. Nice fireworks pictures!

We celebrated in London, UK, this year, I had no idea the party was going to be that big - I was shocked!
