200 years… has anything changed?

(En español más abajo)
CanadaThis day caught me while I was away in Brazil, so please bear with me writing about it so late.

Argentina celebrated its 200th years of existence on May 25th, 2010. Many -like me- will say that this is not right, as Argentina's Independence Day is July 9th, 1816. But it was on May 25th, 1810 that a group of Argentines decided to rise against the Spanish Government, dethroned the Representative of the Crown and formed the first Local Government. Though this is definitely not the day we became an independent country (the proof of that being the numerous battles we fought against the Spanish in the following years), it's still commemorated as if it were, so I will give the Government the benefit of the doubt for having decided to turn this into such a gigantic event. We have an odd country, with two Independence Days and two foundation days for the City of Buenos Aires...

And you know what, it was a fantastic celebration, a party attended by a couple million people. You can see that in the images that my cousin Maria Nelly sent me, it was just incredible. I was afraid that our government was going to take this into some kind of political propaganda, but for once I was wrong to doubt their intentions and it turned out to be just what it was supposed to be: a celebration of who we are. Of course, in typical Argentine style, both the governing party and the opposition tarnished the moment by engaging in those selfish, short-sighted, stupid wars they have, with President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner refusing to attend the gala at Teatro Colón (shame on her, what she's missed!) or having the traditional Te Deum mass outside of Buenos Aires since she's not getting along with the Clergy these days. As I said, the opposition is not helping either, with people like Mauricio Macri (mayor of Buenos Aires), Elisa Carrió and others getting louder and louder as their contribution and ideas show an alarming lack of intelligence, creativity, depth and responsibility.

But then we have this government, who is becoming very successful at making an enemy of anybody who doesn't agree with them. In pure Hugo Chavez's style, they go after media, clergy, big companies, whoever dares to show any disagreement or concern about the way things are going. Argentina is in a terrible shape, unemployment is still rampant and the country is even less safe now. Crime has gotten out of control and many people are living in poverty. And let's not even talk about corruption!!! You should just look at the fortune that the Kirchners have amassed within the last 10 years, for example.

But if you dare to mention this to anybody even remotely affiliated with the government, you are immediately persecuted. If you're a public person or entity, you can bet that comments will be made about you, stories will be created, surprise inspections will be sent to your workplace, etc. etc. Heck, there were cases of journalists that have been beaten up just outside of their places of work because they spoke their minds!

They're very strange, these Kirchners. President Cristina was one of the hardest working Senators back in the day, a very prolific politician that was respected by almost everyone. Her husband, former President Néstor, was a governor of the Southern Province of Santa Cruz, and had a very good image, which caused him to win the elections in 2003 against all odds. Néstor Kirchner first 100 days of government were just brilliant; he pretty much did everything that the whole country was expecting somebody to do for the last 20 years, like dealing with a Supreme Court that was definitely supporting the government and sending into retirement some members of the Army Forces that were definitely due. But after those 100 brilliant days... pretty much nothing else happened. Soon we started to see how his government -and then his wife's- started to blame their shortcomings on all these 'enemies' that seemed to be appearing all over the place... Heck, they have even gone beyond ridicule by having one of their Ministers become a blogger to attack those who dare to express their opinions through that medium. What’s next, a Minister of Twitter?

Tango on the streets. Did you see where the musicians are? :-)

Like former President then become Dictator Juan Perón, the Kirchners rule by fear and don't tolerate opposition. Their way of doing politics is erratic, unpredictable and most times, incoherent. Like President Hipólito Yrigoyen back in the 1930's, they seem to have media that only publishes good news for them (Yrigoyen had a newspaper made specially for him, Cristina Kirchner has a TV show called '6,7,8' and many other that are definitely supporting the government). Like Perón and others before, they are trying to divide and conquer. What they seem to forget is that first of all, this is not 1945 anymore; and secondly... they should remember how Perón, Yrigoyen and all those other presidents who lived in their own cloud of farts ended. But we Argentines never seem to learn from our mistakes, we just blame others for them. That has to be the only explanation why I am hearing and reading comments from people that are saying 'we were better with the military government'... Have they forgotten how many lives that cost us? Incredible. Do you want the Kirchners out? Go and cast your vote. But it seems like a very difficult task, since the opposition is nothing but a bunch of politicians that have pretty much nothing to offer. You would have to shake them for five minutes to see if an idea falls off.

I don't really care if an idiot or two come and leave a comment telling me to shut up, and that I don't have the right to speak about my country because I left, (quoting those morons now) "escaping like a coward instead of staying to continue working to bring the country back on its feet". I have heard that since I left and at this point I just laugh off those comments, normally coming from people who are speaking out of ignorance... or envy.

President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner

I love Argentina, it's the country where I was born and where my roots are. I simply decided to leave and come live in a different country because it would mean a better life for my kids and believe me, they come first. And I love it here, Canada is one of the best places in the world. But I'm still Argentine.

And Argentina still hurts. We still look at the future with the back of our heads, and we still choose our personal benefit over everything else. It's all fine until we realize we're in a position in which we can get our pockets full with minimal effort. Who cares about guilt, or a clean conscience?

Enjoy the pictures (more here), it's the only good thing of this post.

Y Argentina aún me duele.

No te preocupes.

    asi estamos

  4. Oh wow, the pictures are amazing! I would have loved to be there in the crowd. And to finally take pictures of Teatro Colón (it was under renovation when we were there last year ;-)

I feel the same about France - I'm just so frustrated with how the country works and is run currently. I remember reading the newspapers in Argentina and thinking "wow, this is... just like in France!"

On a side note, I'm not a huge fan of your President (not that anyone care, right?).
