Didn’t need so many reminders

(En español más abajo)

CanadaI didn't know how to start this post, because I could've chosen two completely different paths: the humorous touch, that would make this a second episode of my 'Frequent flyer rules' series or a more serious one, telling you exactly how I felt last night on my way to Brazil. And who'd thunk it, I went for the second!

I'm a frequent flyer all right, and I normally travel with Air Canada; I like the service, the comfort of the seats and the fact that I have a direct flight from Toronto to almost all of my regular destinations, including this one (São Paulo, Brazil). But I wasn't going to be anywhere near Toronto this past weekend, due to the soccer tournament me and Santi had in Windsor (and of which I will write later on this week). So, my options were: drive four hours or more to Toronto and fly from there, or simply cross the border and fly from neighbouring Detroit. I knew tickets were cheaper from there too, so I went with Detroit.

But I didn't get to fly Air Canada but another company, which shall remain unnamed; I heard, though, that its name is an acronym for 'Doesn't Even Leave The Airport' :-) The flight from Detroit to Atlanta was supposed to be at 5:40 PM, and we boarded at around 5:00 PM. We didn't leave until 6:15 PM, so we were way behind schedule by the time we landed in Atlanta. I went to board my next flight and found out that it was oversold. I became a volunteer to spend one night in Atlanta, with hotel and $600 given to me by the airline, with the condition that I gave my ticket to someone else and fly on the following day. In the end, however, my services weren't needed; they simply got rid of all those who were travelling for free (like employees and their families) and hence made enough room to board all of us. That's when the real Calvary began.

I was assigned a different seat than the one I originally had (I can only sleep well if I'm curling against the wall, so I always ask for window seats). I was put on row 15E, which is the bulkhead row. Seat "E" meant that I was in the middle section of the plane (you know, you have two seats, then three, then two again per row. I was on the rightmost of the three seats). This whole thing meant that not only I had no way to stretch my legs but also that I couldn't lift the arm rest right next to me, as they were fixed (because they have the trays inside). To add insult to injury, when they brought dinner I realized I couldn't use my tray at all, as there wasn't enough room for my belly. The solution I was offered? I ate with the food tray on my lap! Same thing happened when breakfast was served to me an hour before we landed (well... 'breakfast'... it was a croissant and a banana!).

I didn't get any sleep at all, so uncomfortable I was; oh, and my neighbour had a HUGE leather jacket that he put right in between the two of us so he could rest his head on it, so there was even less space. Beautiful.

I felt very embarrassed about the whole thing; or should I say humiliated. I'm not happy about being fat, that is obvious. But that doesn't mean that I have to feel depressed about it, and today I am. I'm tired of being fat. I actually felt relieved that I wasn't present for Santi's team picture yesterday, because I would've looked huge compared to them.

I gotta do something about it. Gaby and the kids deserve to see less of me and for a longer time, after all. It's also time I start to feel a little better about myself. These three weeks I'm going to be away from home are crucial. I will make the best of them.

  2. I'm sorry that the trip sucked wind.
I used to cry when anyone would call me fat - now I just laugh it off..Stating the obvious? Oooh...
I am feeling a lot like you lately though. I want to lose weight so that I feel better about myself, so that I can be more active..I hate seeing myself in photos so it must be time to change something :)

  7. You shouldn't feel bad. A lot of people are not comfortable in planes - would you feel bad if the seat was not confortable because you are too tall? Doubt it.

Hell, I don't consider myself fat (not skinny either, mind you!) and I'm not comfortable in most planes either! They seem to get smaller and smaller.

If you want to lose some weight for health reason, go for it. But don't feel bad about what you are and how you are.
