CanadaSanti continues to bring good performances at the indoor soccer league our team is taking part of. After those two wins I talked about a few weeks ago, they have played four more games, with three victories and one loss. One of the games they won had epic proportions: they outplayed their opponents throughout the whole game, but their keeper was just phenomenal and kept the score 0-0. With just seven minutes to go, the other team found earned very first chance to score... and did. I don't think anybody at the field thought we were going to come back from that, except our players. We tied the game with just two minutes to go, and 40 seconds later, Santi scored the winning goal. It was our best win in many, many months!

Unbeknownst to me, Santi was being watched that day. And luckily for him, he played fantastically. Somebody came to me in between games and asked me "Are you Santi's father?". "Yes", I replied, confused. He told me that that he was the manager of a London team, that he had been observing Santi and that he wanted to know if he could come to a practice later that day.

Well, it wasn't just 'a' London team; it was 'the' London team! They're called London United, and they currently are the top team in the province. It's a private club, so you only get there by invitation; this was big! "But he's going to be tired after having played two games, I'm afraid he won't be able to perform at 100%". The other gentleman said it was OK, they just wanted to see him in action with their own players (some of which Santi knows as they're from Waterloo).

I was right, as Santi didn't perform at 100% after having played two very tough games. He was 110% at least! He did very well and was invited to play a little scrimmage game at the end of the practice. Once they were finished, the coach (a former English Premier League player, and also of the Canadian National team) came and told me "So, we'll have our next practice on Wednesday, can he come?". So they were interested in him! I explained to the coach that it would be impossible for him to travel on a weeknight, so he replied that Sunday was OK too. We went back (not before we talked to his current coach to let him know about all this) and Santi did even better that day; it was clear that he belonged in there.

But soon we both realized that this would be an incredibly demanding 'job' for him. This team practices three times a week during the summer, and they're 100 km away. And then there's the games, most of which are played in Toronto (100 km in the other direction) or Ottawa (500 km). It was a very difficult decision for Santi to make, because it was evident that opportunity knocks but once in these cases. Should he go for it, or should he stay with his (also new) team?

In the end, he decided it was for the better that he stayed with Waterloo, so we went up to talk to the London Manager yesterday. Santi thanked them for the opportunity he was given, and stressed that the main reason why he felt he couldn't do it was the demanding travelling schedule, which gets complicated further by the fact that I might be travelling at the same time, so who would take him to London, Gaby? Impossible, she would be stuck with the other three...

I think it was a very responsible decision that Santi made, and even though he must be disappointed that he won't get to play for such a powerful team (they have five players in the Ontario team), he left the doors open, so he might get a call to play as a call-up or in a tournament.

We'll just sit by the phone with our fingers crossed.

Ahora, en la frase que dice: "The other gentleman said it was OK, they just wanted to see..." No entiendo...:)
