Unplugged

We’re on holidays this week, trying to enjoy some good quality time together. As I mentioned before, one of the biggest obstacles we had to go through was that state of perpetual connectivity my kids seem to be immersed in, so we had to go for some strict measures.

 

Today, for example, we went to the neighbouring city of Scranton, PA and we took the back roads. This means we went all across the mountains, and there were some beautiful scenes in there; we wanted to make sure the kids would get to enjoy them, so we confiscated all electronic devices right at the moment they were getting in the car. The result? We could have actual conversations on our way there and back, saw a fantastic sunset and me and Santi even saw an elk!

 

But that wasn’t all. Last night, right after dinner, we decided we could have a little family fun, so we played charades. It was me, Caro and Flor against Gaby, Juan and Santi. We barely got away with the win, and we witnessed a stellar performance by Florencia, who managed to get me and Caro to guess the names of the movies and/or songs within 2 minutes, without failing a single time. Then we went all against each other and in that competition it was Carolina again who took the win, followed by Santi and myself. The memorable moments include Gaby trying to get the boys to guess the word “my” (believe it or not!), me playing “King Kong” and my 10-minute long, eventually unsuccessful attempt at getting Carolina to guess “South Park”. I even got her to guess “Oh my God, they killed…” and still she couldn’t guess it!!! Well, at least now I know she’s not watching shows she shouldn’t watch…

 

The interesting thing is that not only we didn’t have to face a concert of rolling eyes from our teenagers (and pre-teen) when we suggested playing charades, they even asked us if we could play again tonight!!!  We’ll see who wins this time. (I feel like I’m Clark Griswold!) :-)

 

We’re having a really good time, enjoying each other’s company. The unit, while not luxurious, has everything we need and a little more. We’re very close from the ski centre (so much that we see it from the front door) and the scenery is just spectacular. The complex has a pool (with salty water) and a game room, so here I am, just after a good swim, writing this while Juan and Caro are playing pool, Gaby plays the piano with Flor… and Santi is on his laptop as well… (you can win every time)

 

We will go to the ski resort tomorrow, to find out about rates, packages, etc. Expect some really cool pictures soon!

 

 

Estamos de vacaciones esta semana, tratando de disfrutar de un buen rato en familia. Como dije antes, uno de los obstáculos más grandes que hemos tenido que enfrentar es ese estado de conectividad perpetua en que mis hijos parecen estar sometidos, así que tuvimos que tomar medidas estrictas.

 

Hoy, por ejemplo, fuimos a la vecina ciudad de Scranton, PA y fuimos por los caminos rurales. Esto significa que cruzamos las montañas y vimos paisajes hermosos; queríamos asegurarnos de que los chicos los disfrutaran, así que confiscamos todos los equipos electrónicos en el momento en que subían al auto. El resultado? Pudimos tener conversaciones mientras viajábamos, vimos un atardecer de película, y Santi y yo hasta vimos un elk (una especie de alce)!

 

Pero eso no es todo. Anoche, despues de cenar, decidimos tener un rato de diversión en familia, y jugamos a las mímicas. Eramos Caro, Flor y yo versus Gaby, Juan y Santi. Ganamos apenitas, y vimos una impresionante performance de Florencia, que se las arregló para que Caro y yo adivináramos cada una de las canciones y/o películas que le tocó hacer en menos de dos minutos. Después de ese torneo, jugamos otro en el que fuimos todos contra todos, y esta vez Caro ganó, seguida por Santi y luego yo. Los momentos más memorables incluyen a Gaby tratando de que los chicos adivinen la palabra “my” (“mi”, créanlo o no!), a mi haciendo “King Kong” y mi trabajo por más de 10 minutos, eventualmente fracasando, para que Carolina adivinara “South Park”. Hasta le hice adivinar una de las frases que dicen en todos los episodios (“Oh my God, they killed Kenny”) y así y todo no lo sacó!!! Bueno, al menos ya sé que no mira shows que no debería mirar…

 

No sólo no tuvimos que bancarnos que nuestros teenagers (y pre-teen) nos hicieran caras de disgusto cuando sugerimos el juego, sino que se divirtieron tanto que quieren jugar de nuevo esta noche!!! Veremos quién gana esta vez.

 

La estamos pasando muy bien, disfrutando de nuestra compañía. La casa, si bien no es lujosa, tiene todo lo que necesitamos y un poco más también. Estamos muy cerca del centro de ski (tanto que se ve desde nuestra puerta) y el paisaje es espectacular. El complejo tiene una piscina (de agua salada) y un game room, así que aquí me tienen, escribiendo luego de nadar, mientras Juan y Caro juegan al pool, Gaby y Flor tocan el piano… y Santi está en su laptop (no se puede ganar siempre).

 

Mañana vamos al centro de ski a averiguar por precios, etc. Esperen buenas fotos!
