Mr. Mom

CanadaI left the office a little early yesterday, because I was tired (I had worked until about 2:00 AM on Wednesday). Still, I didn’t get to go straight to my house, because I had to pick up Santi after his soccer game (his team won 3-0 and is now in the finals!).

It was cold and dump, but that’s never an issue for me. However, I started to feel really cold as the game progressed, to the point I was shivering by the time we heard the three whistles indicating that the joust had ended. Took Santi back home, only to drive him back to the dentist and then to a Hallowe’en dance at the Secondary School his former schoolmates are attending now. By the time I got back home, I definitely had a fever, so I just went upstairs and crawled in bed. Angry that I would miss choir rehearsal once again, I tried to close my eyes for a little while.

There was a problem, though: it was Thursday, so Gaby wasn’t at home (she teaches on Thursday evenings). And with Santi gone, it was me, Juan, Caro and Florencia… I had to get up and fix dinner for them, and I had to help Juan and Flor with their homework. But ‘Mr. Mom’ came to the rescue…

- Don’t worry, Dad. I will take care of you and I will make dinner for me and the girls.
- But how? What are you going to cook, Juan? I don’t think it’s safe…
- No, I won’t cook anything. I will make sandwiches for the girls and I will just have a Jamaican patty.
- You can’t have one of those yet, Juan, remember how sick you were
- OK, then I will have a cheese sandwich like the girls.

And away he went. He made the sandwiches and even put them in the toaster oven; then he brought me some cold and sinus medication with a glass of water, found the thermometer and stayed in the dining room doing his homework while Carolina was helping Flor. I slowly started to feel better, so I called Juan and Flor and asked them to bring their homework for me to check. Flor was done, but Juan still needed some extra help composing a long story about why he loves breakfast.

We worked together, with me writing on my laptop the sentences Juan was coming up with. Once we were done with the draft, he took the laptop downstairs and started to write his composition. I was feeling much better by that time, so I actually got up to go pick up Santi from his party. Gaby had come back by then, but she was exhausted, so I told her to go to bed.

When I came back from picking up Santi at around 10:30 PM, I found Juan’s homework finished on top of the dining room table, and I knew he had just finished (my laptop’s screensaver hadn’t even kicked in yet). Still, he was up and ready to face the new day by the time I went downstairs for breakfast. And you could tell he was proud of all the things he had done the night before.

I’m always worried when I travel, because I don’t like leaving my family behind. But I am slowly starting to realize that there’s nothing to worry about. Gaby is perfectly capable of taking care of things in my absence. And even when she’s not around, I have very responsible and caring kids.

I couldn’t be prouder of them.

Argentina

- No te preocupes, Papi. Yo te voy a cuidar y voy a hacer la cena para las chicas y para mí.
- Pero cómo? Qué vas a cocinar, Juan? No me parece que sea seguro…
- No, no voy a cocinar.

    Adonde estaba Gabriela? Ehh?
