Want a free burger? Show me your MENSA membership

CanadaI’m sitting at a Burger King in Waterloo right now, the same in which Gaby and the then 3 kids waited for me while I was being interviewed for what would become my very first job in this wonderful country.

gabriel20090702 They’re running a “Transformers 2” promotion these days, so you get peeling cards on every drink (and the fries too). You have to scratch one of the two faces there, and if it contains a prize, you can claim it next time. I won a cheeseburger last time I was here, so I thought it would be a cool idea to claim it. I made my order and then gave the little peeling card to the guy behind the register.

To my surprise, he gave me a piece of paper that contained a Math skill-testing question, which I was supposed to complete (successfully) in order to ‘earn’ my right to eat that burger. I grabbed it, sure that it would be as easy as “1 + 2 = ___”  and then half a ‘3’ for you to finish drawing. But this is what I got instead!

Upon looking at it, I thought: Well, the result must be something like 100, or 5, or something like this. Let’s just follow it”. I’m really good at math, so it didn’t take me more than 10 seconds to resolve the quiz, but the result (541) was definitely what I was expecting.

Are they doing this only in Waterloo because of the high number of students we have (many studying Math, by the way) or is this a clever plot to keep me away from burgers?

  2. So Burger King won't let you "have it your way" unless you can successfully solve a math equation? Methinks it's their way of saving a few free burgers!

  8. I checked into this for you and have an answer. You could say I'm friends with 'The King' and yes, I do have it my way. :)

Because Waterloo is so prestigious and is known for it's higher educational status, they thought they would make it interesting for those to frequent the Waterloo store location by making the question a little more challenging than usual. Obviously, it's not very challenging for a math student in university, so you could consider it a joke. Anyone who actually has a difficulty in answering this question can ask the staff for the answer. The whole skill testing question is a stupid policy made by the government that limits prizes to those with an education. Really sad, considering that those in poverty spend so much on lottery tickets and if someone actually won but couldn't answer the question it would be so unfair. I heard that actually happened to someone with a learning disablity, and they couldn't claim their prize. Burger King at least doesn't pull that crap - they are very kind to persons with disabilities.

By the way, they are coming out with G.I.Joe stuff next.
