Birth Stories #4 - Florencia

birthstories

(This is my fourth -and last- story of the four I'm writing for the "Birth Story Carnival" that Lotus held at her "Sarcastic Mom" blog. It actually took place on March 24th, but I still wanted to participate in it. For more birth stories, click here).

CanadaOur life in Canada was getting much better by early 2003. I had been working at Mitra / Agfa for 1 full year now, and we were slowly trying to recover from our financial disaster (during our first year). The kids were doing great, with Santi going to Grade 2 and both Caro and Juan in kindergarten. We were still renting, but had moved to a different place, a townhouse that had three rooms and a finished basement. It was in a pretty good location, with bus stops, supermarkets and even the mall very close, and just off the Expressway. But... the place was poorly maintained by a careless landlord. Having the laziest superintendent ever didn't help either. We soon decided we needed to move again. But Gaby had another surprise for me: "I'm pregnant".

Gaby and I - 17/May/2003 I realized that I had done it again. If you read my previous birth stories, you will remember that every time I shaved my beard, Gaby ended expecting. I don't know what kind of a 'reversal Samson thing I have going on in there, but it seems that I get stronger when I lose some hair, even if it's facial hair. ;-)

I will need Gaby's help here, because I don't remember correctly, but I believe that my mother phoned one day and made a comment about us expecting again, which had nothing to do with anything we were talking about (she had either dreamt about it or just thought about it). The part I don't remember is whether we had just found out, or we didn't even know yet, but she sure caught us by surprise! I didn't have to talk a lot when I told my friends, as I started with "You guys remember I shaved my beard a few months back?"

Gaby's pregnancy was uneventful as always, except for a few problems with her blood pressure. She was scared, though, because of her age (she thought she was too old) and because she was afraid she wouldn't understand anything the gynaecologist would tell her, but of course, she was underestimating her English skills. We had another amniocentesis study done, that put the 'guess the gender' score 4-0 for me, as Gaby though it was going to be a boy. We needed to do two things: find a name for our baby, and choose the godparents. We didn't go wrong with the second, because the two people we chose (our friends Charlie and Isabel) are still among the closest friends we have here. We had a few alternatives for the baby's name: Gaby liked Laura and Guadalupe, and I liked Florencia and Veronica. We discarded one name each, and it soon became Laura vs Florencia for the title. I wasn't too convinced about Laura because it reminded me of a very nasty, conniving former co-worker; luckily (at least for me), Florencia was the chosen name.

One day, we went to the bank to find out if we could get a loan to buy a mini-van, because four kids wouldn't fit in our old Ford Escort Wagon. To our surprise, we found out that we already qualified for a 0% down payment mortgage! We were even told that I could take a loan from my RRSP (my retirement fund) to pay for all legal costs, etc, and that I could return that money in 15 annual instalments. Unbelievable. Gaby took care of the searching, and she would only bring me along if she really liked a house; I believe that happened only two or three times.

14_Gabriel_Martin_Paco_Guillermo A family reunion took place in late July, as my mother and three of my brothers came to Canada for a few days. We rented a cottage in St. Joseph (near Grand Bend, ON) and spend a full week there. That was when we announced that we were going to buy a house. Our very first one! And soon enough, we did. Those definitely were good times. Our timing, however, wasn't that good. We closed the deal on a house and we were supposed to move on October 29th. Problem was, Gaby's C-section date was the 24th! To make things even worse, I was told I was leaving on a two week trip to Belgium on November 10th. Well, somehow we managed to go through everything with no major hiccups. Having my mother in law with us for five months sure help! :-)

Our friends from both choirs where I was singing (The Renaissance Singers and Trinity) organized a baby shower to which Gaby and her mom were invited. It was a wonderful gesture, and it sure provided us with lots of things we needed for the baby.

Florencia was born at 7:10 AM on Friday, October 24th, 2003. My friends Charlie and his wife Laura were at the hospital with me (they had come from London, 110 Km west from home) and were as excited as I was. Surprisingly (or should I say finally!) they allowed me in and I was there as Gaby was having her C-section, so I got to hold Florencia in my arms within seconds of having come to this world. I fell in love with her immediately, of course, and the same seemed to happen to everybody else.

She was beautiful from day One. And she still has me wrapped around her finger. I love all my children with all my heart, but Florcita is my weakness.

I can't live without that beautiful, silly, smart girl. Who could!

Florencia, age... 10 minutes! :-)

Argentina
