Silly Monkey Stories #222 - Uh... thank you?

(En español más abajo)

Canada
30/May/2013 –  Santi (18)

He’s a little too old for a SMS post, isn’t he? But well, the almost surrealist conversation I had with him the other day justifies the inclusion.

We know teenagers in Canada can get a job at the age of 14. They will normally save some money but spend the rest in clothes, perfumes and going out. In general, and we’re not the exception, they are not required to help their parents with the household expenses or things like that (something that was common when I was that age).

But one thing is not to expect them to help and a completely different one that they expect us to continue financing their outings, right? Well, he won’t lose his faith like that and comes after Mom first:

- Can I go paintballing?
- Sure! Do you have money?
- It’s free

(A few minutes later)

- It actually costs about $5 to $10…

(And he stays there)

- Well… have fun! (One can be a little cruel sometimes)
- …
- You’re not expecting us to pay for that, are you?
- What do * I * have to pay then?
- Oh, no, by all means, here’s $10. Mom and I are going to the movies, give us money.

(He gradually begins to understand where am I going with this)

- I don’t have any! I can give you a coupon I have for the theatre, worth $10
- Yes, but we’re not going to that one
- WHY???!!

(I let him suffer a little more. Then I engage his mother again, hoping I will get her support… let’s see if she catches my vibe)

- Poli, can you give Santi $50? He needs it to go paintballing with his friends
- (Outraged) WHAAAT??!!

(The look on his face!!!)

- I don’t know why Dad does this to me!
- OK, it’s true. Just give him $30…
- No way!!
- Stop it, Dad!

Juan witnesses the conversation and looks at me as if he was saying ‘Dude, you’re rotten’)

- OK, here’s the $10. How are you going to get there?

(Good one, Gaby!)

- They will drive me from Michael’s place (the other end of the city)
- Aha. And how are you going to get over to Michael’s, you taking the bus? (Checkmate!)
- No. You can drive me or I can take the car, whatever you prefer… (No, you cannot counter a checkmate…can you?)
- Ah… how considerate of you!!! Thanks for thinking of me (exaggeratedly sarcastic)
- Oh, never mind, you can count that as part of my anticipated gift for Father’s Day… (and he leaves, smiling from ear to ear)

He got the money, and the car. I feel I have lost a game that I had won until 30 seconds before the buzzer.

Argentina30/May/2013 –  Santi (18)

- Puedo ir a paint ball?
- Seguro! Tenés plata?
- Es gratis

(Al ratito)

- Sale unos $5 o $10 dólares, en realidad…

(Se queda ahí)

- Bueno… que te diviertas! (Uno es un poquito cruel a veces)
- …
- No estarás esperando que te paguemos nosotros, no?
- Tengo que pagarlo YO?
- No dejá, yo te doy $10.

- No tengo plata!

- NO!!!

Cómo vas a ir?

(Buen ataque, Gaby!)
