Silly Monkey Stories #197 - Guts

(En español más abajo)

USA12/Jun/2012 – Juan (13)

Juan is a great singer, and he’s not very shy about singing in public (well, me being his dad…). He hasn’t shown a passion for it yet, though he has been taking drums lessons and now has switched to guitar. He likes to sing, and I’m always trying to get him to sing with me, with variable results.

Juan is graduating from Primary School today, so he has been visiting the Secondary School he will attend starting in September. The last time he went there, two weeks ago, he stumbled upon a sign saying that there were auditions for next year’s school play, “Back to the 80’s”. There was no doubt in his mind, he had to go and audition for a role!

Gaby told him that if he stayed, he would have to take the bus back home because she had to leave. It didn’t matter, Juan was determined. Surrounded by Grade niners, tens and elevens, Juan waited for his turn and took on the stage, singing a song a capella to impress the judges. Then he quietly left, taking not one but two buses to make it back home.

The surprise came a couple of days later. He got an e-mail indicating that not only he had landed a role, but he was one of the main characters, Billy Arnold! This guy is not even attending his new school and he’s already making an impact… We were really impressed by his guts and determination, especially considering that Juan is not the kind of guy whose self-esteem is fireproof.

My beautiful son is growing, and he’s finally paving his way by himself. He has been able to realize that he’s really good at something, and he’s making the best of it. In addition to that, he has finished Grade 8 on a high note, after having struggled for most of his run in Primary School. Heck, he might even get an award at his graduation tonight. But even if he doesn’t , I’m extremely proud of him.

Argentina12/Jun/2012 – Juan (13)

No importó, Juan estaba decidido.
