He’s not doing bad at all

CanadaI have discussed Santi’s passion for soccer ad nauseam, haven’t I? Well, he’s currently playing in an indoor soccer league in London, ON (about 100 Km West from here). It wasn’t easy, and I had to deal with a lot of bureaucracy, lack of support and just plain uselessness in order to get our team accepted. We got in, but then somebody forgot to file some papers or something like that, so we got kicked out. I finally got tired and took matters into my own hands. A couple of days later, we were accepted for good and started playing in the tournament.

It’s not easy, because since we were added to the fixture at the very last moment, we have to play two games almost every Sunday. That wouldn’t be too big of a problem if it weren’t for the fact that sometimes we have five or six hours in between games (like this past Sunday). But our guys are still doing pretty good, sitting in 4th position right now with six victories in nine games.

Though many of our guys are having really consistent performances, the one that seems to be flying high is Santi. With his unorthodox but effective style (I like to call him “Messi”, like the extraordinary Argentine player, but in reality what I mean is “Messy”), his good skills, his athleticism and most importantly his unparalleled drive (I don’t know any players more focused and intense than Santi when he’s on the field), my son is having a really good season. He has scored many goals, to the point that he’s now the league’s top scorer with two games to make up, but he’s also assisting his teammates and –when necessary – even playing in the back. And the important thing is that he’s making all these decisions while on the field, so he will instruct a teammate to go and play forward, that he will have his back. He hasn’t played in net yet, like in these pictures from two seasons ago, but who knows… Pretty impressive for a still 14-year-old!

We had two games on Sunday and both started the same way: with our team playing horribly! We were 0-3 within 10 minutes in the first game, and we went into halftime still losing 1-3 after we scored a pretty goal. The coaches had a very stern talk with the guys during the 1-minute halftime break and that seemed to do the trick, because the second half was the best soccer I’ve ever seen from these guys! They scored 5 goals, and it could have been more, if it weren’t for their keeper! My favourite goal of the day was the 3-3: Santi dribbled past a couple guys right in the center line and pretty much from there sent an incredibly strong shot that went right into the top corner as he was falling backwards. There was nothing the keeper could do…

The second game was an easier win (6-0) but that was mostly because the other team was short-staffed. Again, with just 5 players (it’s six-a-side) they still managed to dominate in the first half (which ended 1-0 for us), but got too tired in the second part. Still, Santi played like he was at the final game of the FIFA World Cup… as usual.

He’s not the most skilled player on his team, he’s not the tallest, or the one in the best shape. He’s not even the most athletic or the one with the best vision. I’d say he’s somewhere between ‘good’ and ‘very good’ in all of those areas, maybe among the top 5. But there’s an area where –as I said– no player can even come close to him: his will, his drive, his aggressiveness… If it weren’t a ‘family blog’ I would have said ‘his cojones’. This is why you cannot afford to sit him for a long time, because you never know when he’s going to pull a bunny out of his shoe and win the game for you.

I might be one of his coaches, but I’m his father too, so sometimes I just sit there and enjoy watching him play. It’s awesome. :-)

Argentina

Santi playing –in net- two years ago. He looks so small!
