Still waiting for the spring

(En español más abajo)

USAThis was probably the coldest winter we have had since we came to Canada a little over 13 years ago. Temperature has been below -20C (-4F) several times and when you add the wind to that... I can say I have felt the rigour of the merciless Canadian winter this time.

The week of Jan 6th was probably the worst. We were coming back from Virginia, where we went to spend the New Year with my brother and his family (and also for my brother's birthday party). We left at 10:00 AM on Sunday, and by 8:00 PM we had barely made it to Detroit. We had to spend the night there and resume our trip at noon the following day, arriving home at around 8:00PM again but on Monday! The next couple of days were really cold, with the temperature dipping below -30C. I remember going to the office, and how the low temperature and the strong wind made my head hurt badly.

We got lots of snow, to the point we just don't know where to put it when we shovel. We are almost in April, and it keeps falling! We have a big driveway now, so we had to buy a snow blower, which Juan operates with dexterity. Being the responsible guy he has grown to be, he would come back from school every day, open the garage, get the snow blower and only after clearing the snow of the day he would get in the house.

Me and Gaby were concerned about how cold our room was going to be in the winter (it’s above the garage and with minimum insulation) but we did OK. Going out, however, was a different thing. I wear undershirts now. I bought my first ever back in December and now I have like two dozens of them. I’m getting old, there is no doubt about that :-(
