Embarrassing moments - #56

Embarrassing moments

USAIt happened last week in Brazil, and I got to do a ‘two for the price of one’… We were having breakfast at a hospital, when everybody started to greet one of my co-workers, saying ‘Happy Anniversary!’ to her. I knew her from my previous trips, so after I kissed her (hey, it’s Brazil), I asked her, candidly:

- So… how many years?

She hesitated a little, but then did told me how old she was. That’s when I remembered that ‘anniversary’ is what they say to refer to ‘birthday’ in Portuguese!! I thought it was her wedding anniversary.

But I could make it worse, so I did. Later on that day, and after a long, long day at work, I asked her:

- Well, what are you planning on doing tonight? I recommend going to a spa, so you can relax after such a busy day. What do you think?

Again the hesitation, and then she said:

- I will go out for dinner with my husband…

She didn’t have to stress the last two words. “Oh, my God, she probably thought I was asking her out!” (and she’s about half my age). I said something in the lines of You should both go, then”  and then quickly disappeared. After all, I had already run out of feet to put in my mouth!

Argentina
