Sleeping habits

USA

One of the things that run in my family is how little sleep we get. As long as I can remember, I have been able to function with six, five and even less hours of rest per day. Even more, for years (and this took a lot of effort to change) I wouldn't go to bed unless I had the radio on or my headphones with some music to listen; I would not be able to get any sleep unless I was listening to something.

My father was pretty much the same. I remember he would come home from work at noon, and then go take a nap right after lunch (something I could never do), but of course with the radio on.  Same at night, he would go to bed at a pretty reasonable time, but always with the radio on his end table (I remember that he would normally listen to LU6 Radio Atlántica, from the neighbouring city of Mar del Plata).

My current job has not done much to force me to acquire better sleeping habits. If I'm in the middle of an upgrade, I would normally start at 5PM on a Friday, and many times end working through the night and until way into Saturday. If I'm lucky, I get three or four hours of sleep and then back to the site. Saturday night is pretty much the same story, and if things are complicated, I might have to work through the night on Sunday as well.

This has caused that I have learned to seize any opportunity I have to catch some z's. Before, I would never entertain the idea of sleeping while flying: I would spend the whole flight watching movies, reading, looking at the little map showing where we are... Now it's different. If I have a 1h 15m flight from Buffalo, NY to Charlotte, NC, you can count on me falling asleep the moment I put my butt on my seat, and I won't wake up until I'm disturbed by the noise and movement of people getting out of the plane at my destination.

It's different if I'm home. I'm still going to bed at 2 or 3 AM like I have always done. How do I manage to stay conscious the following day, is a mystery to me.

This past weekend I was upgrading software at a hospital in Louisiana. Things went well, but we left at around 3:00 AM both on Friday and Saturday night. I would be back here the following morning, but I'm evidently a kid anymore and I have accumulated stress and sleep deprivation because today, on 'go live' day, when my presence is required the most... I overslept.

A total embarrassment, and the first time this has ever happened to me. I got to the hotel past midnight and requested a wake up call for 7:00 AM. I stayed up working in my room until 2:00 AM, but I wasn't worried because they were going to call me. The problem is that they actually didn't.

I woke up at 8:15 AM, fifteen minutes after the time I was supposed to be at the hospital. And I'm 40 minutes away by car.

There were no problems, of course, because things went well and our customer knows very well how much and for how long we worked this past weekend. Nobody will say anything, and there even was some people who arrived here after I did, but I feel terribly because I had given my word (OK, and also because I'm the one in charge of the upgrade).

As I said before, I'm not a kid anymore. Now I get tired more often, and I am beginning to feel the weight of a year that was decidedly very tough, in all senses. I still have two more trips in 2012, but both of them are close to home (Detroit and Sarnia, in Ontario). Then I will go on a very deserved break, and that will be the moment to sit down and consider if I'm still good able -and willing- to do this.

Si tengo suerte, me escapo a dormir tres o cuatro horas, y vuelvo enseguida.

  2. I envy you and all the people that can function with little hours of sleep. I need 10 h to be in my best shape and 7-8 to go through the day decently. But after 5 days of going to bed at midnight and waking up at 7 am, I need at least one night with 11-12 h. Also, I cannot fall asleep if there is light or noise or if I am not laid down. And if I am sleep deprived, I am cold, cranky and I can't think. So yeah, I envy you deeply.
