Hecklers

(En español más abajo)

CanadaOne of the 10 Commandments for bloggers clearly specify that you have find what makes your blog unique and keep that going every day. I read that everywhere, and though I'm not particularly fond of internet lists or tips, I have to admit that I think that this idea makes sense. It has taken me a lot of time to figure out what would make my blog unique, though!

I believe I have asked this question in the past, because I do remember what one of my blogbuddies (Ale Marge) said about my blog. She mentioned that by reading it, she felt like she was peeking at my house through the window, so intimate I was sometimes. I found that interesting and very accurate. Not everybody blogs under their real name and puts so much personal information out there. It has cost me dearly, if you remember what that bastard from DiarioNecochea.com did to me last February. But even that won't stop me.

I don't think, however, that the intimate tone is what defines my blog the best. I think I have (or had) something that very few other blogs have: a team of hecklers. You might not have noticed, because they are all Spanish spoken people; but for the last two years or so, I knew that there were four or more people waiting for me to post something just to start roasting me. As harsh as it seemed sometimes, it has always been done with the utmost respect and with my wholehearted approval. Even more, these guys have been making fun of me in other blogs, knowing that I read them!

I'm talking about Mike (from Pehuajó, Argentina), Ale Betoño (in Calgary, Alberta), Jorge (aka) JorMig (from Buenos Aires, Argentina) and my brother Martín (aka) Fafa, also from BA. Jorge and my brother have known each other for years, but the other ones have only met online. Even more, I have met Mike for the first time in person 10 days ago, after almost 10 years of having become 'online friends'.

I won't lie if I say that I have written many (I'd say 'most of my') posts thinking on what their reaction would be. I had this image of them crouching behind a bush, ready to ambush me the moment something got published, and I found that very funny. I compared JorMig and my brother to Statler and Waldorf from the Muppets Show, and next time I see a comment from them, they had changed their avatar to show those characters. Whenever they made those derogatory comments about myself, I would try to reply in a very altruistic way, only to 'lose control' and begin to lash out at them as well. It was a game very well played -I think- by the five of us.

But that has changed recently. Ale is AWOL, he stopped blogging several months ago and his online presence has been very, very limited. Same happened to my brother Fafa, especially after the tragedy that our family went through two months ago and that still affects us. Mike is very busy with his many activities and projects, so he's been commenting way less often (but of course left two comments today, just to mess with my post), and the same applies to my dear friend JorMig. They still come occasionally and leave a comment or two (except for Ale), but it's not in the same spirit than the ones they used to leave.

You know I'm disappointed because my blog is not getting as many visits as it used to. A big factor is that Google reset my Page Rank from 4 to 0 after I have to republish my entire blog, and another one is the fact that many people are still hitting dead links when looking for my old posts. But though that still disappoints me, it doesn't bother me anymore; at least not as much as it used to. I have always said that I write this mostly for myself, so I should not be bothered.

But I would lie if I said that I don't miss my hecklers. Call me a masochist, but having four or more guys being always ready to grill me after every post was one of the things that kept this blog going for a long time. I hope they come back soon.

  8. Looks like they have you pretty much covered. Eight comments in a day is not bad at all.Now I know how you feel abot page rank. They did it to me also. Now it will take you about a year to get it all back.
    Just stand tough.

  12. Thank you, Russ. I see the hecklers came back, such control I have over them. :-)

Voy a averiguar bien.
