We are not afraid of anything and anyone here at “Live from Waterloo”, so today we’re going to deal with one of the most delicate, controversial issues in the history of mankind. No, no, don’t start clapping and complimenting me for my valiant efforts, just wait until you read what I have to say. As el Fumigador feliz says in his blog, my hand is not going to shake! :-)

Since the vast majority of the TV shows I watch are recorded, I normally skip the commercials. But whenever I watch them, I always end thinking about this special class of marvellous items, that evolve at such a pace that makes it practically impossible not to buy new ones every week, and throw the others away, as they have become automatically obsolete.

I’m speaking, of course, about the following items:

1. Shampoo. There shall be a new brand of shampoo every week, that not only will leave your hear shiny and smooth, but also will take care of your dandruff, make you look sexier, cure your cold and if you let it, help with the expenses and chores at home.

2. Shavers and razors. With total precision and predictability, you will see every ten days or so that there is a new brand in the market; if we’re talking about a razor, this one will have not three, but four, five and even eleven blades. If it’s an electric shaver, then it will be cordless, work at impossible angles, have a built-in wireless router and a little compartment in the back where you can store your beer or Coke. Even more, they will have a lubricant band that will cause that razor to slide through your face in an impossibly smooth fashion (or your legs or armpits, should that razor be pink), they will give you the sensation of having been hit by a wave of minty water, and in some cases, it has been reported that it reduces the circumference of your hip.

3. Toothpaste. You know what? Just go and pick any brand, they will not only leave your teeth clean and white as recently harvested pearls, but they will also protect your gums, strengthen your enamel, give you a fresh sensation in your mouth that will last all day, tone the muscles of your face, get rid of your wrinkles and on its free time, contribute to reduce the poverty in Sudan. Excellent!

One thing, though. The toothpaste is the closes to my definition of ‘marvellous products’ above, as every tube contains a never ending supply of toothpaste. No matter how many years it’s been on top of your bathroom sink, you know that if you keep pressing and rolling, a little more toothpaste will eventually come out.

4. Toothbrush. All of them are recommended by every dentist (or by the best dentists, which has the implied message that this company took some time to go through every dentist in the world and then rank them according to their ability and knowledge). So the question is… how can that be possible? They’re all different! Some have bristles over here and some have them over there; some allow you to clean your tongue with the handle, some even go further and claim to be able to combine the ‘pleasure’ of brushing your teeth with the ‘joy’ of flossing… and a long list of ‘etceteras’. But again… they’re all different! How the hell can be all ‘recommended by dentists’? How do I know that the guy showing in the commercial is a real dentist and not an actor? And in the even of him being an actual dentist, how can I tell that nobody had bribed him so he would only speak in favour of that particular brand? Uh? How?

5. Feminine hygiene products. Not only we find a big variety of products here (tampons with or without applicator, all kinds of pads, thin, thick, winged or wingless, with manual transmission and rear mirror, etc etc), but we also assist (stupefied) to the realization that women do not have something called menstruation or period, in which they discharge blood from the uterus and through their vaginas, marking the beginning of a new menstrual cycle. No. As we always see on TV, what women have ‘down there’ is called ‘liquid’, ‘fluid’ or even ‘moist’ (?) and it normally shows in a bluish tone (maybe the models are Royalty?) or even transparent. Not only I end asking myself how much I really know about women and the reproductive cycle, I also learn that if you don’t but the latest brand of these products, then horrible calamities will be unleashed upon us, including solar storms, hurricanes, floods, an invasion of roaches and an outbreak of old and forgotten sicknesses like the scurvy. I must admit, though, that I was pleasantly surpries when one of these products put a TV commercial in which they ended saying something in the lines of ‘with our products, there are no more worries. Period’ and the ‘period’ looked a lot like a red dot.

If I were a woman, I would only buy that brand (no clue which one it is), because that would be the only one who hadn’t lied to me.

The final, biggest lie consists of showing these women engaging in all kinds of sports, arts or any other enjoyable activities, with a huge smile in their faces, and without the slightest indication of being in any kind of pain; we all know (even us brute men) that most women spend the few days of the duration of their cycles either collapsing in bed due to the pain in their ovaries or in a really foul mood… or both things, actually.

That concept of you can do all kinds of things when you put one of those items in is the biggest lie of them all. I tried… and I couldn’t even walk.

imageHave you ever noted that tampons look somehow like bigger sperm?

  1. Hehehe, me hiciste reir.

  6. I want the kind with a manual transmission and a rear-view mirror. I deserve the best :-D

Did you notice that North Americans were slightly obsessed with their teeth? We didn't have that many toothbrushes and toothpastes kind in France!
