Silly Monkey Stories #87 – Olympic dreams

(En español más abajo)

Canada15/Feb/2010 – Florencia (6)

It was Family Day last Monday (don’t worry if you don’t know what I’m talking about, it’s a new holiday we have here in Canada), so we took the kids skiing, thanks to my mother who bought lift tickets for all of them (plus I got the hotel room on my point, so we didn’t spend that much). Like last year, we went the neighbouring city of Barrie, and we spent two full evenings at the Horseshoe Valley Ski Resort.

Neither Santi nor Flor wanted to ski on Sunday; Santi wasn’t feeling well, and Florencia wasn’t too sure about going by herself, as we couldn’t find a group class for her. That changed on Sunday, as all four of my kids hit the slopes… and me and Gaby stayed there watching for 5 1/2 hours…

Florencia was doing quite well (under Caro’s supervision), and it was really cute watching her line up and then take the lift with her sister. She looked so tiny up there!!! Me and Gaby watched carefully as she went down the first time, and she did quite a good job, only falling twice. She made it to the bottom and slowed down easily. It looked like we didn’t have to worry a lot about her.

But later that evening we watched again as she wiped out pretty hard. Gaby was the one –of course– who spotted her in spite of the fact that it was already dark, and she was a good 100 m away from us. We smiled, relieved, when we saw her get up while throwing the poles up in the air in anger. “Yup, that’s Florencia, all right”, we both thought. She made it to the bottom, took off her skis and came upstairs to announce that she wasn’t going to ski anymore that evening. I tried to talk her in to changing her mind:

- But Florencia, you’re doing so well! We are watching you go downhill fast, do your turns, keep your feet straight, and you are awesome at slowing down! Soon you will be making fancy moves, jumping, etc…

Florencia looked at me, still angry, and said to me, in order to let me know of what her plans were:

- Dad, I don’t want to be an ‘Olympic person’.

Ah, the over-exposure to TV… one of the perks of living in the 21st Century. Well, at least my kids are already living in that century! I’m slowly getting there…

Argentina 15/Feb/2010 – Florencia (6)

A mí me faltan unos añitos…

  5. LOL!! I don't blame her. I only attempted to ski once as an adult and decided sitting in the lodge with a cup of hot cocoa was more for me. :)
