Tell me Thursday #13 – Our holidays

CanadaDue to my busy work schedule, the kids’ busy soccer schedule and more importantly –let’s face it– our tight budget, we haven’t been able to take a lot of time off since we came to Canada. In fact, all I can remember is a couple of times in which we rented a co-worker’s cottage in Lake Huron, and camping at Algonquin Provincial Park two summers ago. Not a lot when you work so hard, like me and my wife, to put food for six on the table.

When our dear friends David and Myrta invited me and the kids to their cottage in Skootamatta Lake last year, while Gaby was in Argentina, I kept saying to myself “I have to come back and bring Gaby with us, she’s gonna love it!”. It was a matter of finding the right time of the year, and also being lucky enough to find the cottage available. Planets aligned two weeks ago, and we were able to rent it for a whole week. To make things even better, my brother and his family were able to join us for a few days!

The weather didn’t look inviting at all, as we had showers and thunderstorms during the first four days. Whenever we caught a sunny break, however, you would either see our kids running to jump into the lake, or us adults fishing or just reading a book by the water. There was a funny moment when my sister Analía took a picture of all six kids (my children and both my nieces) playing video games or reading inside, while me, Gaby and my brother were the ones having fun outside!

We got a call from our friends on Tuesday evening, saying that they felt so bad for us having such bad weather that they were going to let us stay a few more days free of charge. We were delighted, of course (and that was something very nice but that you can expect from people like our friends); it worked like magic, because Wednesday was just a great day, and the same happen until we left this past Monday.

We played, swam, took the boat for rides, drove around, visited other lakes and little towns… we did a lot of things! But most importantly, we spent some great quality time with our family; for both us and my brother’s family, the next few days will be full of ‘and do you remember when…’ funny anecdotes, which we will treasure forever.

My favourite things? I will pick five:
  1. The incredible sunsets
  2. The whole two families eating marshmallows and s’mores by the campfire, while trying not to be eaten alive by mosquitoes and black flies
  3. The movie nights, where we would all sit around my laptop to watch a good family movie just before we went to bed, because…
  4. …there was no TV, no internet and no cellphone coverage. Heaven for me and my brother, absolute hell for Santi and my nieces! :-)
  5. Cooking with a frying pan on top of the barbecue, when the power went out on Sunday evening.
I hope we can do this again soon. I came back fully charged and ready to tackle whatever is left of 2009, but I sure miss our 10 days of fun!

Argentina
