We meet again

USA
We saw each other again today, after over three years, when we had met in very painful circumstances for me. Even more, before that last encounter, we hadn’t seen each other for over five years. That’s too much.

When I found out that he was very close from where I’m staying in Virginia, I thought I gotta go see him again”. After all, and in spite of the distance, we had grown up together. Depending on the time of the year, we would see each other every week or two, or every day. We would spend a lot of time together and we got along really great (though there was that time when you almost killed me, though it was my fault, I was too careless). I missed your presence and your constant whispering. It was so good to see you again!

I was coming back to the hotel, after an extenuating day at work. It was 11:00 PM and I said to myself What if I go see him? He’s just 10 miles away!”. I had some doubts, of course. It’s crazy! You’re very tired!!! What if something happens because of your carelessness?”. But my lack of patience was stronger than me.

I drove those 10 mi. and then I arrived to Virginia Beach, where we would meet. Excited in spite of being really tired, I found a place to park and went out looking for him. I had seen his brother just last year, the one living in the West, but it wasn’t the same; I barely knew him (we had barely seen each other twice until then). I walked down towards a little road that was just by the beach.

I walked on the dry sand with difficulty (my knee was hurting so bad!) and then with care on the wet sand. We met, finally. I looked at him without saying a word, until I just got closer and touched him.

The water was cold, and it was a little windy. It was exactly 11:45 PM on a Tuesday, and I had just met again with somebody I had just realized how much I missed.

What a pleasure to see you again, Atlantic Ocean.

Two minutes later, I just turned around, got in the car and drove back to the hotel. If I come back next week –like they’re saying– I’m bringing my bathing suit and I will go swimming, even if it’s 2:00 in the morning.

With my friend the sea.

  3. Nicely told, Gabriel. I grew up going to the Jersey shore almost every summer as a kid, and I'm delighted to be living so close to the ocean. The sea is very special, especially when it's been your friend for so many years.
