He's still not giving up

CanadaLast year, I was writing about Santi's first game with the "A" team, when he was called up to play in London against a team called Southend Dynamos. I told you how excited he was, to the point that he could barely sleep the night before; I also went through his failed attempts and how he wouldn't give up until he finally scored a goal.

After that game, he played three more with the "A" team, and then a tournament. He was even called up to play for the U-13 team (kids one year older than him). At the end of the season, he was once again invited to join the "A" team, to which he finally said yes.

He struggled a little during the first games he played with his new team. After all, it was a different kind of game. Many times, he left the field almost in tears, so frustrated he was. But he persevered.

Last Friday, he finally had the opportunity he was looking for. And it was against the same team (the Southend Dynamos) and even on the same field as last year. He played with that intensity that had made him such a powerhouse in the previous season.

After a first half in which he played very aggressively but he could not score, he came back very focused in the second period. With the score 3-1 in our favour, he connected a header to score the fourth goal, and then the best of him so far this season followed.

He captured a ball in the midfield and dribbled past three opponents. Suddenly, he took a long shot from almost 40 metres, that caught the keeper outside of his box and went into the top angle. A fantastic goal! But that wasn't all. A few minutes later, another counterattack and he took yet another shot from even a longer distance. The keeper hadn't learned his lesson, and that was his third goal in just five minutes or so.

He's now the second top scorer of the team, and has seven goals so far this season. Not bad for the rookie!

He has a game tonight, and another one tomorrow. By now, he has earned the trust of his coaches, and more importantly, his teammates. Let's see how he does!

Argentina
