Silly Monkey Stories #162 - tbh

(En español más abajo)

The popularity of social media has caused many acronyms and made-up words to almost become known by everybody. For example, we don't have 'best friends' anymore. Instead, we have 'BFs', and if it looks like the friendship is going to last, then we're talking about 'BFF' (best friends forever).

Acronyms like LOL, ROFL and LMFAO have become so popular that there's even a popular rock group that has taken the last one as their name. In Facebook, instant messaging and BBM (Blackberry Messenger) we're used to seeing things like 'nvm' ('never mind') or 'hby' ('how about you').

The one I want to mention today (and that my kids are very fond of) is 'tbh'. Every second day or so, I will see one of my kids' Facebook status read as follows: 'Like for a tbh'. And it's a simple exercise: you click on the 'like' button and they will post on your wall, saying what they honestly think about you ('tbh' means, then, 'to be honest').

Whenever I 'like' it, they just come up with predictable, uncompromised stuff like 'tbh, I think ur an awesome dad' (yes, 'ur' means 'you are'). Nothing juicy. It's funny, though, to see how kids try to find something nice to say of other kids who they don't know that well... or they don't like that much.

Many of my kids' friends have done their 'like for a tbh' as well, and more than once I have been tempted to hit the 'like' button to see what happens... There is also a 'tbdh' ('to be dishonest') thing going on too, I think it would be safer for me to wait for one of those before I do.

I wish we had a 'tbh' that worked the other way around, meaning that whenever I post it, it would be you telling me what do you honestly think about me. Wouldn't you like that?

I wish we had a 'tbh' that worked the other way around, meaning that whenever I post it, it would be you telling me what do you honestly think about me. Wouldn't you like that?e d

  1. I am not looking forward to the day when my children are on Facebook. I am going to spend my day policing 3 accounts instead of blogging. LOL!!
