CanadaI had a bad day yesterday. It’s not that I had any problems at home or at work, but I was very unhappy with things that happened or that I did, like sending an e-mail to an audience of 20+ instead of 5 because I chose the wrong distribution list. This could have qualified as an embarrassing story, but I only write about them when they’re funny, not when they make me mad.

Anyway, since  I was in a bad mood, I decided to take a mental break at noon and went out for lunch, something I rarely do (whether I bring my lunch or I forget it in the kitchen, I normally eat at my desk). I had a soup and a burger and worked on some future posts… a lunch as boring as my work days have been lately.

On my way back, I called Gaby to ask her something and she said that Santi had mentioned that there had been an earthquake in Waterloo. Yes, right”, I replied, Like that can actually happen”. Gaby said that my son reported numerous comments on Facebook about it, which convinced me even more about this earthquake thing being fake news. Like anybody could believe anything that appears on Facebook, other than some ‘friend’ you have never seen is really good at virtual farming.

But I turned on the radio and there it was, there was a magnitude 5.0 earthquake that had its epicentre 34 km north of Buckingham, Quebec, very close to Ottawa. It lasted about 30 seconds, but it was felt all across south-western Ontario and a friend reported that even in Cincinnati, OH. Some buildings were evacuated, and there were minor displays of panic. Luckily, no important damages were reported, and more importantly, no casualties either.

Kitchener, Ontario - Wednesday}{2:00pm}-{062310}-
The Rogers building on Weber St. was evacuated after an suspected earth quake hit southern Ontario. Tremors were felt throughout the region.

I didn’t feel a thing. I was very concentrated into having my lunch, and never felt a tremor.  Had I been at work, chances are I wouldn’t have noticed either, as the whole building shakes all the time, thanks to the very poor air conditioning system we have. It’s not fun to look at how my monitors shake as I’m trying to work… luckily, we’re moving to our own building come March 2011.

I wonder how the earthquake felt at the office… was there more shaking or both movements complemented each other and the whole building was finally quiet, if only for 30 seconds?

Later that day, we had tornadoes hitting different cities in the region, so it wasn’t the best of days for south-western Ontario, at least weather wise! Oh, and we had a humidex of 32C at 2:00 AM last night, so imagine how well I slept! Exactly like those summers in Buenos Aires I hated so much.

Yo no sentí nada.

Saluditos

  3. It was very noticeable in the office. Much different than the regular jiggling that happens - this was more of a wobble, and it went on for 15-20 seconds.

  8. I was talking by phone with my husband, in Spanish I said to him, esta temblando!! If I said that in English probably someone would look to me as a crazy lady.... I look around and no one at my office make acknowledge of something wrong... although my desk was moving and I was pretty sure the feeling I had was an earthquake, my common sense said to me I was wrong... no one in the office was acting weird, no earthquakes in Canada as far as I know, my husband on the other side of the line didn’t feel it... so... I concluded it was caused for my stress of these days....
