Embarrassing moments - #21

Embarrassing moments

Canada
I have always been known for how little time I dedicate to sleeping. On average, I'd say I sleep up to 5 hours per day, and most of the times I can only do that if I turn on the radio or listen to some music or a podcast coming from my laptop. My father was pretty much the same (except the podcast part) and so is my older brother, so that's yet another thing that seems to run in the family.

Many times, especially during my teenage years, I would stay up until it was so late that there was no point in going to bed. Yesterday I verified that I'm not a teenager anymore.

I had to stay up on Wednesday and work all night on fixing some servers that were badly needed for a radiology conference that my company is participating in. My day started at 5:45 AM on Wednesday, which wasn't good because I had gone to bed at 2:00 AM. I survived the 'working through the night' phase with no problems, but the hours after that and until they were merciful enough to let me go at around 2:00 PM were quite embarrassing.

I would just black out in front of the computer, closing my eyes and freezing for 15 seconds before hitting a key. That looked like a scene from the movie "Awakenings", and while it was bad enough by itself, the embarrassment  would get aggravated by the fact that there were colleagues around, waiting for me and probably wondering why would it take me so long to go through a "Press any key to continue" screen.

In the end, I was so tired that I couldn't think straight, so I had to apologize for not being able to solve the problem even though I knew exactly where it was. It took a fresher guy about 10 minutes to get 'my' server going, thus adding insult to injury.

Got back to the hotel and had a 2 hours long 'powernap' which was interrupted by an SMS message. Then I couldn't sleep until 2:30 AM again. Darn.

UFA!
