Tell me Thursday #17 - Posture

CanadaDo I have to mention once again that my whole life seems to revolve around soccer? Yes, that’s what I thought… Santi has been playing ‘Rep’ (competitive) soccer since he was 9, so we just went through his sixth season. Carolina, on the other hand, even though she has been invited to join her age group’s Rep teams (or at least the tryouts), she never showed too much interest… until this year. I said it before, I have always thought that she was probably too strong to play in what we call the ‘House’ (recreational) league, but maybe not there yet for ‘Rep’. The team where she’s playing this season seemed to be the solution to her predicament, as she’s part of a ‘House’ league all-star team. But… though I do see that in terms of skills and understanding of how to play positional soccer she’s at the right level, she’s far more aggressive than most of the girls and definitely not afraid of standing in front of the ball or taking a header – same as is brother (genetics, perhaps?).

Like Santi, she’s normally played in attacking positions (though she mostly plays in the midfield these days). Like Santi, she will run until she can’t possibly move (maybe Santi has more determination than Caro). And like her older brother, Carolina is the first player the coach will think of if the goalkeeper is unavailable for whatever reason. I am sure that this is all for the same reasons I have mentioned above: determination, aggressiveness, stamina, lack of fear. But both are very good goalkeepers on top of that. Carolina even won an MVP award in the house league, something she always makes sure she reminds her brother of. :-)

Carolina’s soccer season comes to an end this weekend, after a tournament they have in Aurora, ON. Then we’re on a very brief hiatus until Sep 26/27, when the tryouts for the 2010 season begin. Then, not only Santi and Carolina will be fighting for a spot in next year’s team, Juan will try out as well! We’re playing against some strong teams this weekend, so the chances of a blowout are certain; that’s when our keeper shuts down and refuses to continue playing, so I guess I will get to see Caro don her blue –or green– jersey once again…

I found it amusing that I captured two random pictures of my kids playing the occasional game in net, only to find them in almost the same position. I guess there are some things you don’t need to teach them!

  2. Thanks for taking time to comment on my TMT!

Isn't it funny how our kids pick up on each others body language as well as verbal language?! I'm sure you've noticed lots of other things they do that are similar to each other.

    Thanks for sharing,
    Ciao

  3. Around soccer, alrededor del futbol...
    Me suena conocido.
    Lindas posturas, absolutamente naturales.
