Silly Monkey Stories #55 – Business man

US Around 1971 – Gabriel (4) and Cristian (5)

Let's start the story with a confession: I never was a good business guy. This story goes back to my childhood in Necochea; it was common to spend the days at the "Miguel Lillo" Park during the spring (and the summer too, if the weather wasn't good for the beach). This huge park runs by the sea for kilometres and has millions of conifers. There, between the playground and the picnic areas, I would spend the afternoons playing with my brothers and cousins.

One time, both me and my cousin Cristian took our brand new bicycles (they were of a pale green colour). We went out to ride around to show them off, and we soon found a few kids playing soccer. Next to them, there was another kid opening a package containing 4 "Chocolinas" cookies (the same that you would by at school). We look at each other and there was no doubts... we proceeded to showcase our marketing skills.

We came back later, my cousin riding the bike while eating cookies, and me walking while bouncing my new possession: a shining "Pulpo" ball ("The Pulpo!, I can imagine every Argentine ages 30 and above say while reading this). When my parents asked me what had happened with the bike, I replied almost casually:

- Oh, yes. I traded it for this ball...

While my parents were deciding whether they were going to kill me right there or take me by my ear to undo such a beneficial trade, they realized that my cousin was eating his Chocolinas. Then they said, in a ironic tone:

- And you, where did you get those cookies? Well, at least you didn't trade your bicycle for them, like this boob here (pointing at the author of this humble blog)...

My cousin replied, feeling almost insulted by such a comparison:

- Nooo! I gave them my golden ring!

And away we went, out butts still hurting, to try to undo our negotiations. At least my cousin had eaten his cookies, but that didn't help his cause when he told my aunt, like justifying his actions:

- But Ma! They were chocolate cookies!!!
