Evil Dad strikes again... and fails miserably

Live from Waterloo is on holidays! We’ll be back on August 5th

CanadaI have mentioned this several times, but just in case: In the seven seasons Santi has been playing soccer, he has never missed a game. We have made unbelievable efforts (like travelling for 300 km just for a game), but he always made it. It’s become an honour thing…

The guy is a little concerned these days because he has already received two yellow cards this season (both for not being able to shut his trap); should he be given a third, he would automatically miss a game. Needless to say, he’s been behaving like an English gentleman in the last few games.

As I have also mentioned, Santi played a few games –and a tournament– for the city’s other team, the Warriors. In order for him to be included in the roster list, the coaches asked me a little pink book that contains Santi’s picture and all the information about the different leagues in which he has been playing throughout the years (some sort of a player’s résumé). These books are normally requested and checked before every game, to make sure that nobody is using players that are ineligible or not in the right age group (looks incredible, but it happens often).

The thing is that I forgot to ask for the book after that tournament he won, so Santi played the next game without a book (thankfully, books are very rarely requested at our level). Before the next game, he reminded me to go and pick it up, which I did… only that I never told him. So we went to the neighbouring town of Stratford and Santi was convinced that if the coaches of the other team asked for the books, he wouldn’t have been able to play.

What did I do? The obvious: I conspired with the other team’s coaches so they would come to check for books, making sure they did see I had Santi’s. The idea was to watch Santi’s face as he started to realize that his streak would be broken because of me. I also made sure I told the other coaches of my own team, so they wouldn’t find the request of checking books too odd. It was all set for a really nice prank.

But that @#%$$#$ referee took forever to show up! So much, that both coaching teams ended sending the kids to the field and we could not proceed with the fake ceremony of checking the books. “It’s OK, we can do it the next game”, Steve (our head coach) suggested, but it couldn’t be, as Santi played for the Warriors once again (three times, in fact) last weekend, so I needed to produce the book…

OK, this one might have failed badly, but you must agree, it would have had been a good one! I’m still Evil Dad, even in defeat.

IMG_1001 Santi in action in Sault Ste Marie, playing against Thunder Bay
