First class (A Christmas Story)

CanadaWell, I’m back at home. It was a very busy week (very busy), but everything turned out great. I was very tired, and I couldn’t walk around town like I love to mostly because of the weather, so all the pictures I have of Northampton are night pictures that look pretty crappy, like this one:

I went back to London on Friday night, and even though I was really exhausted, I couldn’t fall asleep until 7:00 AM on Saturday (it seems that my body hadn’t adapted to the new time zone at all). Woke up at noon, and the day was so horrible that I decided to go straight to the airport. I sat there and waited for a few hours while I was watching some movies on my laptop.

By the time I finally boarded the plane, my concern was that once again, I wasn’t going to be able to sleep well, and I had lots of things to do today (like singing at 10:00 AM and then the soccer practice at 1:30 PM). To make things even worse, the overhead compartment for my row was full with all the backup equipment the flight attendants use, so I had to put my backpack far away (so long, using my laptop during the flight) and the rest under my seat (like I wasn’t uncomfortable enough). A young lady came and sat next to me and I jokingly told her not to worry, that I normally sleep leaning against the window.

As I was thinking about the things I had to do today, one of the flight attendants came over and asked the two people behind me if they were travelling together. They said yes, so she then asked us the same question. We said “no”, but the young couple behind us said “She’s travelling with us, though”. The flight attendant then looked at me and asked me: Could you please come with me, Sir?”.
I got up, confused, but I remembered that I had asked if there were any exit row seats available, so I rejoiced at the possibility of having some extra leg room…

To my surprise, the lady took me all the way to First Class. This gentleman here will take your seat, sir, and you will enjoy the rest of the fight in first class. We will bring you the menu momentarily”. I looked at her, incredulous, and she added: I will explain this to you later”You better do that! :-)

Once we took off, she came back and said to me: This gentleman travels often and was automatically upgraded to First Class. He felt that it would be a nice thing to trade places and have somebody else have that experience, he wouldn’t mind flying in Economy. He seems to be that kind of person” (who likes to do nice things on Christmas Season, I presume she meant).

I just could not believe what was going on. I mean, think about the size of a plane going from London to Toronto. What were the chances that they were going to pick me for this? And then, yet again, what his gentleman had done… I was up and ready for a miserable flight and two days of recovery about 10 minutes before, and now I was picking my meal from a menu while getting read to watch a movie in my ‘La-Z-Boy’-kind seat. Unbelievable.

Still confused, but growing very self-conscious (I felt like Leo Di Caprio on “Titanic”, assuming that everybody else in the First Class section was thinking “Oh, he doesn’t belong here, he’s Economy”). I clearly didn’t know what to do, so I chose to do the only reasonable thing: since I felt like a kid in a toy store, I behaved like one! I explored and touched everything. Pressed every button my chair had, turning it horizontal for a nap first and then back up in order to activate the massage setting. Watched movies, but also looked at all the different little bags containing little things for me to use, like blindfolds, toothbrush and toothpaste, earplugs, creams, etc. I was concerned I couldn’t use the foot rest because I had no socks, but then I found a pouch containing a pair of disposable ones! Every time a flight attendant came by, I would ask for a Diet Coke, a coffee or just some water. I was this close of asking her for a ‘real man’ drink… but I didn’t need to get drunk and make a fool of myself in front of the rest of my new section, did I?

I picked the following from the menu:
  • Appetizer: Moroccan Lamb with Couscous and chick pea salad (the salad never came)
  • Main Course: Sweet potato curry with Almond Basmati rice, flatbread and beet raita (I didn’t eat the beet) + bread
  • Dessert: I passed (the options were Strawberry and Marc de Champagne shortbread or fresh fruit).
Later on, they brought a cheese table and I picked brie and cheddar. About two hours after that, I got strawberry ice cream, coffee and cookies, and right before landing, they offered sandwiches (tuna or salmon), which I respectfully declined.

I was in row 1, so I left almost immediately after we landed, and since this time I remember to bring my Nexus card with me, I didn’t have to go through Customs. “This is all going really well”, I thought, once I was the first to be in front of the carousel to wait for our luggage…

The first suitcase emerged 47 minutes later. And mine, about an hour and 13 minutes after I stood up in there… I knew it.

Still, I will never forget this flight. I was on the receiving end of a random act of kindness, and I felt like a million bucks. While still on the plane, I went back to thank this gentleman, and as we were shaking hands, I came up with an idea of something I could do to as a retribution. I opened my backpack, grabbed one of my Renaissance Singers Christmas CDs and said to him:

- “Here. Please take this, it’s a Christmas CD I recorded with my choir a few years ago. There are songs from all over the world, and some of them were my contribution. If you listen to the ones in Spanish, you will be able to hear my voice more clearly (though I’m not a soloist). I know it’s just a CD, but I couldn’t think of anything that’s more personal and meaningful to me than this. I hope you enjoy the music I make as much as I will enjoy the gift you just gave me”.
He seemed happy too. I then went back to my Row 1 seat and asked the flight attendant:

- “Could you please do me a favour and take a picture of me here? My kids will never believe this”…

Argentina

  1. Wow. I love to hear stories like this one. I have never flown first class. Never. It sounds like heaven. You know what? You deserve a little something like that. Shawn and I were just talking about how much you and Gaby impacted our lives last Christmas. When we came home form the hospital on Christmas Eve and found the tin of cookies, it just about made me cry. I will never forget your kindness, Gabriel.
