My funny Valentine

CanadaIt's Valentine's Day today, and I finally got to celebrate it properly.

I don't usually have the car, so it was impossible for me to go anywhere to buy Gaby a present this week. The same happens to me for other days, like our anniversary, her birthday or Mother's Day. I get great gifts, yet Gaby has to settle for whatever last minute thing I found for her. It's not fair.

So I got up at 1:30 AM and went to Wal-Mart (it's open 24/7 in here). There, I bought a small gift for her, a heart-shaped box of Milka chocolates and the most important part: a big teddy bear holding a big heart.

I bought another box of chocolates for my mother in law, who is still visiting us. Knowing that it was very likely I was going to get in trouble if I didn't, I bought four smaller chocolate boxes for you know who...

Me and Gaby met in 1987, and have been together since September 30th, 1990. Yes, I remember the date we started dating. We dated for a very short time, though, as we got married on April 24th, 1992. We are very close, and even though we have had our disagreements, I don't remember a single time where we have had an actual fight. A discussion and a 'no talking to you for xx amount of time' is probably the worse we've experienced.

Gaby is a hard worker, the most responsible person I know. She's worked since she was around 12 years old, either taking care of children, or at a store, teaching or later on running her own business. Her first experience at being a 'stay at home' mom was once we settled here in Canada. While she enjoyed it a lot, she still felt she needed to do more, so she's gradually getting back into it. She currently teaches three courses at different Community Centres ("Flavours of Argentina", Cake decorating and Spanish lessons) and she takes food orders for different friends, co-workers and acquaintances. She's very successful in both activities. I'm amazed at how good of a teacher she has become, especially considering the fact that she's using a different language.

Gaby is also brave and supporting. She was with me 100% when we decided to move to Canada, and there is no way we could have succeeded if it weren't for her. When I gave up, after the 'coffee in my laptop incident', it was Gaby who convinced me to get up and go to the library to check my e-mail there; of course, a job interview was waiting for me, and that's how we ended in Waterloo. Another time in which I was depressed was after my accident. Imagine, I spent five months in bed, unable to move, walk, go to the washroom or do anything by myself. Gaby was there to take care of me, in the last months of her pregnancy, with a broken wrist, and while still working. She would drop everything to come back home either because I was hungry, needed to 'go', or the most embarrassing reason of them all, the remote control had fallen off the bed and I couldn't watch TV. Many times I felt discouraged and depressed about our situation, my work, our finances, anything, and she was there to be my rock. Luckily, I am able to provide her support when she needs it.

Gaby is funny! Sure, she plays straight man to me (in the words of Biddie), but she's funny as hell. I remember how many times she and my brother Martin would engage in a senseless, silly conversation about anything, in which every answer would be even more childlish or just plain dumb, until a) they would both start to laugh and b) I would decide to walk away so I wouldn't be the butt of their jokes next. She loves the fact that I'm always doing silly things at home, like showing up for dinner wearing one of her pink night gowns, or wearing a wig, spraying everybody with water or leading her into believing almost anything. She likes to do those things to me too, unfortunately for me.

Gaby is a great woman. She's a great -a fantastic- mother and the best wife I could have ever dreamt of. I'm the luckiest guy in the whole world, and I have no doubts I wouldn't be here today if it weren't for her. Actually, God only knows where I would be if it weren't for her.

Gaby, I love you with all my heart. Would you be my Valentine once again? How 'bout for the rest of our lives?
